Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A four-year-old girl in Kashkadarya region died after being beaten by her stepmother, according to investigators. A criminal case initially opened over intentional harm resulting in death was later reclassified as intentional murder and transferred to the regional prosecutor’s office.

According to the Children’s Ombudsman, a dispute broke out between a 32-year-old woman and her husband on 26 September. During the conflict, the stepmother struck her stepdaughter, who suffered a severe head injury and died shortly afterward.

The following day, the district internal affairs department opened a criminal case under Article 126 for intentional harm resulting in the victim’s death. The suspect was detained.

However, on 30 September, the case was transferred to the Kashkadarya Regional Prosecutor’s Office and reclassified under Article 97 of the Criminal Code as “intentional murder.” The pre-trial investigation is now being conducted by the regional prosecutor’s office.

The Children’s Ombudsman said it would monitor the investigation and keep the public informed of its progress.
