Construction of Jizzakh Nuclear Plant Proceeds on Schedule
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Construction of an integrated nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan's Jizzakh region is progressing in accordance with approved schedules, with no delays at any stage of work.
Approximately 915 cubic meters of concrete have been poured at the site since the start of initial concrete works. Azim Akhmedkhadjayev, director of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers (Uzatom), announced the progress during an interview with the O'zbekiston 24 television channel.
Akhmedkhadjayev noted that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev issued specific instructions to accelerate the creation of external infrastructure required for the facility. Following the head of state's authorization to begin foundation pouring, construction at the site has continued in line with established deadlines.
The head of Uzatom stated that additional stages of concrete placement involving several thousand more cubic meters will commence before the end of the year, confirming that all work remains on schedule for timely completion.
Akhmedkhadjayev emphasized that construction complies strictly with international standards, noting that a mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently visited Uzbekistan. He added that the necessary modern nuclear infrastructure has been established in the country while site-level work continues in accordance with global requirements.
The integrated nuclear power plant project is being implemented under an updated configuration agreed upon by Uzatom and Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom in September 2025. The revised plan provides for the simultaneous construction of two high-capacity power units and two small modular units.
Under a supplementary agreement, the main portion of the plant will feature two Generation 3+ VVER-1000 reactor units. The small-scale facility will consist of two units powered by RITM-200N reactors, each with a capacity of 55 MW. The combined capacity of the integrated station will exceed 2.1 GW, comprising 2 GW from the large units and 110 MW from the small modular reactors.
Preliminary construction for the small nuclear plant began in October when excavation work for the RITM-200N reactor unit pit commenced in the Farish district of Jizzakh region. Initial concrete works began at the site in March to prepare the reactor building's foundation base, including waterproofing and grounding systems.
A formal groundbreaking ceremony for the first unit of the integrated plant took place in the Farish district on 4 June 2026. The symbolic pouring of the first concrete marked the official start of construction. Concurrently, Uzbekistan and Russia signed a supplementary agreement to the construction contract, formally establishing the updated layout containing both large-capacity and small-scale units.
