Bamyan Explores Exporting 300,000 Tonnes of Potatoes to Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — The Bamyan Province of Afghanistan is considering supplying up to 300,000 tonnes of potatoes annually to Uzbekistan. Prospects for developing agricultural cooperation and expanding trade were discussed in Kabul by an Uzbek delegation and the Governor of Bamyan, Al-Haj Qari Gul Haidar.

Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Jamshid Khodjaev, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Davron Vakhabov, and representatives from relevant ministries and departments of both countries participated in the talks.

The parties reviewed Bamyan's economic and agricultural potential, prospective projects in the agricultural sector, and opportunities to increase bilateral trade.

Potato supplies served as a key topic of discussion. Due to its mountainous climate, Bamyan is considered one of Afghanistan's primary potato-growing regions.

As part of an experimental project, 44 tonnes of high-yielding Fontane seed potatoes, intended for export and industrial processing, were planted across an area of 17 hectares.

According to the Afghan side, the crops are developing well and a high yield is expected.

Implementation of the project provides for increasing crop yields, introducing modern agricultural technologies, and further developing agricultural cooperation between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

In the future, Bamyan could supply up to 300,000 tonnes of potatoes to the Uzbek market annually.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to intensify direct contacts between entrepreneurs, increase mutual trade, and implement new joint projects in agriculture.
