Argentina Reach World Cup Semi-finals After Extra-Time Victory

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Argentina advanced to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after defeating Switzerland 3-1 following extra time in their quarter-final match in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.

Argentina took the lead in the 10th minute through Alexis Mac Allister. Dan Ndoye equalised for Switzerland in the 67th minute.

Switzerland was reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute. Following a video assistant referee (VAR) review, the referee overturned an initial booking shown to Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes and instead issued a second yellow card to Switzerland forward Breel Embolo for simulation, sending him off.

Argentina secured victory in extra time through Julián Álvarez, who scored in the 112th minute, and Lautaro Martínez, who added a third goal in first-half stoppage time of the second period of extra time.

The reigning world champions will face England in the semi-finals on 15 July.

Argentina are three-time World Cup winners and the defending champions. For Switzerland, reaching the quarter-finals marked the country's best World Cup performance since 1954. The team had previously reached the quarter-finals at the 1934 and 1938 World Cups.
