Polestar began as Volvo's tuning division, but in 2017 it was relaunched as a standalone Swedish premium EV brand under joint control of Volvo and Geely Holding Group. As of early 2024, Geely owns about 24% of Polestar, Volvo around 18%, with the rest split among other investors and public shareholders (Polestar trades publicly).

Distinguishing feature

The Polestar logo — the North Star — is a holdover from the tuning division, but today it symbolizes the brand's independent path: not a Volvo sub-brand, but a separate public company with its own EV agenda.
