Xi, Trump Discuss Philosophy at Temple of Heaven Visit
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Xi Jinping introduced Chinese philosophical ideas of world order to US President Donald Trump during a visit to Beijing’s 600-year-old Temple of Heaven on May 14, part of Trump’s state visit to China.
Xi said the Temple of Heaven, which is contemporary with the Forbidden City, embodies the concept of “round heaven and square earth” and reflects China’s worldview and philosophical approach to its relationship with the world.
Early in the summer, ancient cypress trees in the temple complex stood in solemn calm as a light breeze brought cool air. The two leaders took a joint photograph in front of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests before walking up the steps and entering the building.
Trump said the Temple of Heaven, which has stood for more than 600 years, remains majestic, showcasing the refinement of Chinese classical architecture and the depth of China’s traditional culture, which he said inspired sincere admiration.
The transition from the Great Hall of the People to the Temple of Heaven was described as a diplomatic gesture with cultural significance. A similar program took place during Trump’s previous visit to China in 2017, when his first stop was the Forbidden City. At that time, the two leaders and their spouses also held a tea ceremony at the imperial palace.
Historical records show that several high-profile US visitors have previously toured the Temple of Heaven. Former US President Gerald Ford visited the site, and Henry Kissinger, described as an “old friend of the Chinese people,” visited more than ten times and showed strong interest in the landmark.
The Temple of Heaven has become a bridge for cross-cultural exchange due to its unique architecture and rich cultural meaning. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, which the leaders visited, is built using traditional wooden joinery without nails, featuring the dougong bracket system and integrating astronomical concepts with architectural design. Together, these elements reflect the Chinese understanding of natural laws and the order of the universe, conveying harmony with nature and the passage of time.
Following natural and historical laws implies respect for underlying patterns and alignment with historical trends. This philosophy, the report noted, also carries significance for current China-US relations, as the international community increasingly seeks stability amid global crises.
The question of how China and the United States should act in line with the spirit of the times and make choices aligned with global trends has become a focal point of international attention.
During their talks the same day, the two leaders agreed to define the building of “constructive strategically stable China-US relations” as a new framework for bilateral ties, reflecting this idea of aligning with historical momentum.
Xi also told Trump that ancient Chinese rulers once conducted rituals at the Temple of Heaven, “praying for peace and prosperity of the country, favorable weather and good harvests,” reflecting a traditional Chinese belief that “the people are the foundation of the state, and a strong foundation ensures national stability.”
He noted that ancient China was an agrarian civilization in which weather conditions were crucial for harvests and public wellbeing. The name “Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests” itself symbolizes aspirations for prosperity and social wellbeing.
Xi added that the Communist Party of China has inherited and developed human-centered ideas from Chinese civilization, consistently adhering to the principle of serving the people, which he said has earned strong public support and trust.
Observers noted that Xi’s reference to the cultural heritage of the Temple of Heaven and Chinese philosophical traditions may help the US side better understand China’s development logic, strengthen mutual trust, and reduce misunderstandings.
Trump, in turn, said the two countries should deepen mutual understanding and strengthen friendship between their peoples.
After more than six centuries, every tile and brick of the Temple of Heaven preserves the craftsmanship of ancient builders, and today bears witness to historic interactions between the leaders of China and the United States. Each tree and blade of grass continues to embody the vitality of Chinese civilization and enduring philosophical wisdom.
