Uzbekistan Strengthens Judicial Safeguards for Citizens’ Rights

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a law introducing amendments to several legislative acts aimed at enhancing judicial safeguards and protecting citizens’ rights.

Key changes to the Criminal Procedure Code establish the right of suspects, defendants, and the accused to remain silent at any stage of legal proceedings. This measure prohibits coercion into testifying and reinforces the presumption of innocence.

The law also explicitly bans convictions based solely on confessions, requiring law enforcement to provide corroborating evidence. This provision is designed to prevent potential abuses and ensure the integrity of investigations.

Amendments to the Law “On Courts” further guarantee judicial independence. Judges are now shielded from accountability for specific rulings, ensuring impartiality in the delivery of justice.

At the same time, the legislation tightens regulations governing the suspension, reassignment, or dismissal of judges. Such actions are now permissible only within a strictly defined legal framework.

The law takes effect upon its official publication.
