Uzbekistan Metro Ridership More Than Doubles Since 2000
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In 2025, Uzbekistan’s metro system transported a total of 286.8 million passengers, according to the National Statistics Committee.
This figure represents an increase of 161.1 million passengers, or nearly 2.3 times, compared to 2000, when 125.7 million people used metro services.
Passenger flow has fluctuated significantly over the years. In 2001, ridership reached 141.9 million, followed by 136.4 million in 2002. It then gradually declined, falling to 114.3 million in 2003, 95.6 million in 2004, and 89.9 million in 2005.
In 2006, the metro carried 69 million passengers, rising slightly to 70.5 million in 2007 and 73.4 million in 2008. In 2009, the figure dropped to 68 million and further to 65.6 million in 2010.
The decline continued in the following years, with ridership at 63.9 million in 2011, 65.5 million in 2012, 59.2 million in 2013, and 54 million in 2014. In 2015, 52.3 million passengers used the metro, increasing modestly to 53.5 million in 2016, after which a gradual recovery began.
Ridership grew to 61.6 million in 2017, 69.1 million in 2018, and 79.2 million in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a sharp drop in 2020, with only 38.8 million passengers. Recovery was swift: in 2021, ridership rose to 101.8 million and reached 136.7 million in 2022.
The growth trend continued over the next years, with 172 million passengers in 2023, 270.3 million in 2024, and a record 286.8 million in 2025.
