Uzbekistan may toughen penalties for corruption-related crimes

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A draft law "On strengthening liability for corruption crimes in the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan" has been submitted for consideration by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis. This was announced by the head of the Anti-Corruption Agency Akmal Burkhanov.

According to him, the draft law clearly defines the concept of "corruption crimes". These include 15 types of crimes.

The document envisages a significant increase in punishment for corruption crimes.

In particular, embezzlement by means of embezzlement or embezzlement, as well as fraud related to abuse of office, is proposed to be punished with imprisonment for up to 10 years (now up to 5 years).

Receiving or giving a bribe, as well as mediation in bribery, can face up to 20 years in prison, Burkhanov noted.

At the same time, in accordance with the draft law, those guilty of crimes related to bribery will not be released on parole, and sentences will not be commuted to milder ones.
