Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Senior researcher of ISMI Shahnoza Kadyrova commented on the initiative of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the permanent presence of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) members on the UN Security Council, which the Uzbek leader proposed at the NAM Contact Group summit in Baku.
It should be noted that the organization is one of the largest international organizations, which unites 120 member states that have proclaimed non-participation in military-political blocs and organizations, as well as the development of cooperation based on the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter as the basis of their foreign policy course.
However, one of the most important areas of activity of the Non-Aligned Movement is strengthening the role of the UN in shaping a new world order through its reforms. In particular, the Movement supports the redistribution of powers between the Security Council and the General Assembly in favour of the latter, the establishment of accountability of the Security Council to it, and the increasing role of the Organisation’s specialised agencies.
In this context, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has stressed that in the process of reforming the United Nations members of the Non-Aligned Movement should have a permanent seat in the Security Council.
This call by the head of our state is relevant and timely, as a profound crisis of confidence at the global level is intensifying, geopolitical confrontation is escalating, and numerous challenges to stability and security are emerging in various regions of the world. The President of Uzbekistan is convinced that the United Nations and its specialized agencies must play a key role in finding and implementing effective solutions to these challenges.
It should be noted that the key objectives of the Non-Aligned Movement are fully in line with Uzbekistan’s approaches, particularly with regard to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations.
Uzbekistan has previously advocated gradual reform of the United Nations, particularly in favour of expanding the composition of the Security Council in line with modern realities.
Moreover, our country attaches great importance to interaction with the main international organization, cooperation with which has been identified as one of the priorities of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy. Tashkent is committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other major international treaties, and rigorously fulfills its commitments.
The United Nations, in turn, commends Tashkent’s efforts and initiatives in addressing pressing regional issues. A recognition of Uzbekistan’s efforts in recent years has been the adoption, at the initiative of our country, of four General Assembly resolutions on the most pressing areas of partnership in the region. A number of major international forums and meetings have also been organized in Uzbekistan under the auspices of the United Nations.
Today, the Non-Aligned Movement in many respects defines itself as an auxiliary body that promotes the Charter goals of the United Nations and defends the principles of peace and justice. In this context, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s proposal to grant NAM members a permanent seat on the Security Council reaffirms Tashkent’s unwavering position on fostering an atmosphere of friendship, good neighborliness and confidence in cooperation with countries, consistent with the core principles of the United Nations.
