Toivo Klaar appointed as EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Toivo Klaar has been appointed as the head of the European Union Delegation to Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakhtiyor Saidov, met with the newly appointed EU Ambassador and received copies of his credentials.

According to the head of Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry, the Uzbek government is committed to enhancing ties between Central Asia and the European Union with tangible outcomes.

"Our meeting agenda included discussions on the expanding cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EU, as well as relevant global issues. We are confident that Mr. Klaar’s experience and extensive knowledge of our region will make his tenure highly productive," emphasized Bakhtiyor Saidov.

Before his appointment to Uzbekistan, Toivo Klaar served as the EU Special Representative (EUSR) for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia. He was first appointed to this role in November 2017, with his mandate being extended several times by the EU.

Klaar previously led the Central Asia Division of the EU External Action Service (EEAS) (2014-2017), the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) (2013-2014), the EEAS Policy and Human Resources Coordination Division (2011-2013), and the European Commission Delegation in Estonia (2005-2010).

He has also held various positions at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, served as a defense advisor at the Estonian Embassy in Washington (2001-2002), and as a diplomatic advisor to President Lennart Meri of Estonia (1999-2001).

Toivo Klaar succeeds Charlotte Adrian as the EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan. Charlotte Adrian completed her mission in Uzbekistan in July 2024.
