Switzerland Highlights the Importance of Regional Dialogue on Water Management in the Amudarya and Syrdarya Basins
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Speaking at the third meeting dedicated to advancing dialogue on the Amudarya and Syrdarya river basins, Andrin Fink, Head of Cooperation and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Switzerland in Uzbekistan, underscored the importance of joint regional efforts amid shrinking water resources and climate change.
According to him, effective cooperation among the countries located along the rivers has become critically important:
“We have gathered for the third meeting focused on dialogue for the Amudarya and Syrdarya basins, which is vital for all people living along these rivers. As we know, the climate is changing, and water is becoming increasingly scarce. All concerned parties have come together to discuss how to manage water resources and ensure access to water for everyone.”
The diplomat noted that the event’s participants presented several initiatives that are already being implemented or planned by national partners to improve water management efficiency.
“Today we heard about interesting initiatives being carried out by various national partners to enhance the management of water resources along the rivers,” he said.
Fink also emphasized the active role of international partners in supporting the region’s water agenda.
“Switzerland is very active in this region, but so are the European Union and Germany through GIZ. It is important that partners from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan are also here today. Everyone who can speak on water issues is present in this room to discuss these matters together,” the Swiss representative noted.
The event marked another step toward strengthening regional dialogue aimed at ensuring sustainable water use and enhancing the resilience of Central Asian countries to the impacts of climate change.
