Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Xi Jinping Hold Talks in Beijing
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 2 September, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping held talks in Beijing with the participation of members of the two countries’ official delegations.
The parties discussed strengthening the all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership and expanding practical cooperation. At the beginning of the meeting, Mirziyoyev congratulated the Chinese leader and the people of China on the 80th anniversary of Victory and the successful hosting of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, emphasizing the relevance of Xi Jinping’s initiatives in global governance.
The two heads of state noted significant progress in the development of bilateral relations, the strengthening of political dialogue, and the growing dynamics of contacts at all levels. Mirziyoyev reaffirmed Uzbekistan’s unwavering support for the “One China” policy and joint efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, and separatism.
Special attention was given to trade and economic ties. Last year, trade turnover exceeded US$14 billion, and since the beginning of this year it has grown by another 23 percent. The parties set the goal of increasing this figure to US$20 billion through expanded mutual supplies. The portfolio of investment projects exceeds US$60 billion; in 2024, 64 projects worth more than US$10 billion were launched.
The sides also discussed cooperation in high technology, green energy, transport, raw material processing, and tourism. In Tashkent, the Olympic Village was completed with the support of Eximbank. A proposal was made to establish a joint Uzbek-Chinese center for artificial intelligence development. Both sides welcomed the transition to the practical stage of constructing the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway.
Cooperation extends to education, science, and culture. Branches of leading Chinese universities are opening in Uzbekistan, the activities of Confucius Institutes are expanding, and preparations are underway for the second Education Forum. The “Luban Workshops” program is being introduced to train specialists in key sectors of the economy.
In tourism, the sides agreed to increase the number of flights and confirmed the introduction of a visa-free regime. Uzbekistan is currently represented at an exhibition at the National Museum of China, while exhibitions are planned in Shanghai and Beijing in 2027. As part of the visit, an agreement is being prepared on the mutual opening of cultural centers.
The leaders also exchanged views on international issues and expressed readiness to continue coordinating actions within the UN, SCO, the “Central Asia–China” format, and other multilateral platforms. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mirziyoyev invited Xi Jinping to visit Uzbekistan. The talks were held in an atmosphere of trust and friendship.
