SCO Foreign Ministers to adopt statement on situation in Afghanistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), following the talks in Dushanbe on 13-14 July, will adopt a joint statement on the situation in Afghanistan. Bakhtiyor Khakimov, special envoy of the Russian president for SCO affairs, ambassador-at-large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced this in an interview with TASS.

“It is clear that, taking into account the current situation in Afghanistan, first of all it is necessary to consider how events are developing in this country. The discussion will be both in the format of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers and a separate meeting of the foreign ministers of the SCO member states and Afghanistan in the format of the SCO-Afghanistan contact group. As a result, we plan to adopt a statement on the situation in Afghanistan,” he said.

Khakimov added that the ministers will also focus on preparing the upcoming SCO summit. “The ministers will have to consider a large agenda, primarily related to the meeting of the leaders. We are talking about the list of documents that are supposed to be submitted to the leaders for consideration,” the diplomat explained.

The SCO summit will be held in person in Dushanbe on 16-17 September.
