Samarkand plans to transfer public transport to electric traction

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Representatives of the Samarkand regional transport department spoke at a press conference about the prospects for the formation of a qualitatively new transport infrastructure in the ancient city.

It was noted that in December last year, European experts visited Samarkand within the framework of the project “Purchase of electric buses for Samarkand and creation of road infrastructure” implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

As a result of the negotiations, the largest tourist center of Uzbekistan almost came close to the formation of an environmentally friendly system of passenger transportation. According to preliminary data, in the spring of 2022 it is planned to purchase the first large-capacity electric buses produced in the Republic of Belarus and China. The equipment has already passed test tests according to a range of environmental and operational criteria.

“The program of switching to electric buses will radically change the system of public transportation in the ancient city,” says Jurabek Korzhovov, deputy head of the Samarkand regional transport department. - Its implementation will take time and it will be implemented in stages. In this process, one of the main tasks is to coordinate the plans of transport workers and organizations carrying out construction in the regional center.

As part of the modernization of the passenger transportation system in the city of Samarkand, it is also planned to update almost 900 bus stops.
