Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 14 March 2022, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Council of Judges and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe jointly organized a conference on the topic "The role of women judges in ensuring gender equality and the rule of law in the judiciary sphere."
The event was attended by senators, the Ombudsman, judges, scientists and specialists, national and foreign experts.
The conference began with a video message from the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva to the participants of the event.
It was noted that under the leadership of the President of the country, large-scale democratic reforms are being carried out in all areas. In this sense, the purpose of the conference is to celebrate 10 March - the International Day of Women Judges, declared in accordance with the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly No. 75/274 of April 29, 2021, as well as to discuss the state of gender equality in the judiciary and plans for the future.
The participants of the conference exchanged views on further improving the gender situation in the judiciary, analyzed the international experience and conditions of Uzbekistan in terms of organizing an association of women judges, and developed recommendations for taking practical measures to develop reforms carried out in the country to ensure gender equality.
The speakers made suggestions and recommendations on increasing the proportion of women in leadership and judicial positions in the judiciary, expanding the participation of women in the legal solution of problems and issues that arise in society, identifying and eliminating problems that impede gender equality in the judiciary.
In particular, a proposal was put forward to create an Association of Women Judges in order to enhance the role of courts in protecting human rights in accordance with the rule of law, ensuring equal access to justice through a strong and dedicated judiciary based on the principles of legality, justice and equality.
In addition, it is recommended to sign a Memorandum on attracting students of the Tashkent State Law University, technical schools and lyceums under it to the profession of a judge, to hold meetings, round tables with students of these educational institutions, women judges, whose family life, along with judicial activities, is exemplary, show video "From Student to Judge" dedicated to activities of women judges, invite female students to events of the women’s judicial community.
A proposal has also been put forward to allocate quotas for women in the process of admission to the Higher School of Judges and create distance learning opportunities for women who are away from home and do not have the opportunity to study in the capital, and thereby ensure gender equality and stability in the judiciary.
It was noted that the implementation of these proposals and recommendations into practice will increase the number of women in leadership positions in the judiciary, increase the participation of women in solving legal issues in society and eliminate existing problems and shortcomings in ensuring gender equality in the judiciary.
As a result of the conference, the appeal of the female judicial community was adopted.
