Domestic defense-industrial complex: results of work and tasks for the future

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 11 September 2020, a meeting of the Committee on Defense and Security of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis took place, at which the information of the Chairman of the State Committee for the Defense Industry was heard.

The event was attended by members of the Committee on Defense and Security of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, officials of the State Committee on the Defense Industry, representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Defense.

The event was held in order to ensure effective and efficient parliamentary control over the implementation of tasks in the development of the domestic defense industry complex. In particular, these are the tasks of meeting the needs of the Armed Forces in modern weapons, military and special equipment, organizing the production of import-substituting military and dual-use products, increasing the export potential of enterprises of the military-industrial complex.

During the hearing, it was noted that the development of the domestic defense-industrial complex is one of the priority tasks identified in the Action Strategy and the Defense Doctrine of the Republic of Uzbekistan approved by the head of state.

Particular attention was paid by the meeting participants to the progress of the State Committee for the Defense Industry of the tasks identified in the State Program for the implementation of the Action Strategy in five priority areas of development of the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2017-2021 in the "Year of Science, Education and Digital Economy".

Along with the achieved results, the systemic issues and problems that need to be addressed in the industry were noted. In particular, certain tasks of the State Program for 2020 are being implemented with a delay, and the creation of a unified regulatory framework in the field of state defense orders is being delayed. The event also carried out a critical analysis of the results of the study of the financial and economic activities of the department.

Following the meeting, the Committee on Defense and Security of the Lower House of Parliament made an appropriate decision to further improve the legal framework for the development of the defense industry, eliminate existing problems in this area, and ensure effective parliamentary control.
