Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 20 February 2025, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbaeva held a meeting with Christopher Duggan, the newly appointed Canadian Ambassador to Uzbekistan.

At the start of the discussion, Narbaeva congratulated the ambassador on his appointment, expressing confidence that his tenure would contribute significantly to strengthening bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and Canada at a new stage.

It was noted that Uzbekistan follows an active and open foreign policy, fostering constructive engagement with both Central Asian nations and international partners. Under the pragmatic leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the country continues to strengthen its global position and expand its network of reliable partners.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, Uzbekistan and Canada have achieved notable success in bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and economic relations. Currently, over 40 joint projects are being implemented, 10 of which involve Canadian investments.

However, both sides emphasized the significant untapped potential for expanding cooperation. Investment, science, education, and tourism were identified as promising areas for deeper engagement.

– With Uzbekistan’s population nearing 38 million and around 600,000 young professionals entering the labor market annually, and given Canada’s focus on efficient workforce utilization, an exchange of expertise in youth employment could elevate bilateral relations to a new level, – noted Narbaeva.

The parties also discussed strengthening sister-city relations, expanding trade and economic cooperation through investment, and enhancing joint efforts in environmental protection.

Additionally, the importance of developing inter-parliamentary cooperation, activating friendship groups, and formulating targeted legislative initiatives to protect citizens' rights and interests was emphasized.
