Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- At the 24th plenary session of the Senate, the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On amendments to the Civil Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan aimed at improving the procedure for compensating victims of torture" was discussed.
During the meeting, the senators noted that in recent years a lot of work has been done to further strengthen the guarantees of the rights and freedoms of citizens, including the prevention of the use of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
It was noted that this law is a logical continuation of this positive work, and the need to adopt a document was discussed.
In particular, it was emphasized that social, legal, psychological and medical assistance is provided to victims of torture and compensation for the damage caused to them, including physical and mental harm, material damage or lost profits, moral damage, while paying the costs of providing legal aid, medicines and medical services, psychological and social services.
In addition, it was said that Uzbekistan ratified in 1995 the UN Convention against Torture, on the basis of which systematic, consistent and gradual measures are being taken on an ongoing basis to fulfill international obligations in the field of human rights and freedoms, including the creation of the necessary organizational and legal conditions to prevent torture.
In addition, on 22 February 2021, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council noted that the improvement of the national preventive mechanism is the practical result of the ratification by Uzbekistan of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.
The law was approved by the senators.
