Uzbekistan directs US$630m to development of railway in 2014

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan completed construction and reconstruction of 540 km of automobile roads of general use, the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov said at the session of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan on 16 January 2014.

According to the President, 116 km of roads were transferred from two lane to four lane roads, which increased capacity of these roads by three times.

He said that last year Uzbekistan directed US$630 million to implementation of projects on construction, reconstruction and electrification of railroads, rehabilitation and modernization of railway cargo and passenger transport. Over half of the resources were directed to construction of electrified railway Angren – Pap, Islam Karimov said.

President said that 240 km of railroads were rehabilitated. He added that 650 cargo and 20 passenger wagons were constructed and railway station in Karshi was reconstructed.

Islam Karimov underlined that cargo turnover of air transportation made up 126.3 million tonnes-km or grew by 8.5% year-on-year in 2014.

President said that international logistic center, created on the base of Navoi airport, links cargo transportation to Europe, India, China and Southern-Eastern Asia. Over 200,000 tonnes of cargo have been transported via the logistic center since its launch, Uzbek head said.
