Uzbekhydroenergo Explores Hydropower Potential in Surkhandarya
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In line with directives from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his visit to Surkhandarya on 26 February 2026, Uzbekhydroenergo has commenced a comprehensive study of the region’s hydropower potential.
An expert team, led by Chairman Islam Abdurakhmonov, surveyed the Yukori Topolang area at approximately 3,000 meters above sea level, using helicopters for rapid assessment of terrain, water flows, and hydrological characteristics.
The primary goal of the study is to optimize water resource use, increase electricity production, and expand renewable energy development while considering the interests of local communities.
Preliminary findings indicate that Yukori Topolang offers opportunities for several promising hydropower projects. Their phased implementation is expected to increase clean energy output and support the socio-economic development of Surkhandarya.
As part of the next national project, a cascade of three Kishtut hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 80 MW is planned.
Additionally, a dual 110/220 kV overhead transmission line spanning 17.791 kilometers is under construction, connecting the Zarchob substation to the Kishtut HPP sites, reinforcing energy infrastructure in the mountainous and foothill regions.
Topographical surveys are underway to support further project development along the Yukori Topolang River. Experts have been tasked with accelerating access road construction and carrying out drilling and blasting operations in compliance with safety standards and accounting for increased flow in the Mizot River.
The step-by-step implementation of these measures aims to expand renewable energy, increase clean electricity production, and promote sustainable development in Surkhandarya region.
