Uzbekistan Legislative Chamber Approves Draft Law to Combat Extremism
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At a regular session, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan reviewed in the first reading the draft law “On Amendments and Additions to Certain Laws to Enhance the Effectiveness of Combating Extremism.”
It is noted that modern extremist and terrorist organizations actively use the internet and information technologies to involve youth in violence and the dissemination of radical ideas.
The draft law aims to improve existing legislation in response to these threats, strengthen preventive measures, and enhance cooperation among responsible authorities.
The document provides for increased accountability for offenses related to the preparation, possession, distribution, or display of materials that pose a threat to public safety, through amendments to the Criminal Code and the Code of Administrative Responsibility.
Amendments to the Law “On Countering Extremism” introduce provisions to prevent extremist activity, protect and incentivize individuals reporting such incidents, and establish a legal procedure for recognizing organizations as extremist.
The draft also proposes changes to laws including “On Principles and Guarantees of Freedom of Information,” “On Informatization,” “On Crime Prevention,” “On State Youth Policy,” “On Education,” “On Employment of the Population,” “On Publishing Activities,” and “On Psychological Assistance to the Population.”
These measures aim to strengthen peaceful and stable living conditions, protect society from radical influences, and preserve national independence.
Deputies emphasized that adopting the draft law will enhance the effectiveness of Uzbekistan’s counter-extremism system, reinforce preventive work, and create conditions for fostering an atmosphere of tolerance, mutual respect, and social harmony.
The draft law was approved in the first reading by the Legislative Chamber.
