Uzbekistan Establishes a Republican Center for Radioactive Waste Storage

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 9 February 2026, the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan adopted a resolution “On the Establishment of the Republican Center for Radioactive Waste Storage.”

Under the resolution, the Republican Center for Radioactive Waste Storage is being created on the basis of the radioactive waste disposal facility at the Institute of Nuclear Physics.

The Center will become the country’s sole state institution providing comprehensive radioactive waste management services, including specialized transportation, acceptance, sorting, and the safe long-term storage of materials within the territory of the Republic.

The core functions of the new institution include the sorting, processing, and storage of radioactive waste generated through the use of radiation sources produced domestically or imported from abroad, whose service life has expired or which have been taken out of operation.

In addition, the Center will be responsible for developing innovative methods of radioactive waste management, conducting scientific research, and introducing digital technologies, including information systems for data exchange with relevant government authorities.

The establishment of the Republican Center for Radioactive Waste Storage is intended to ensure safe and efficient management of radioactive waste in Uzbekistan, while also strengthening the country’s scientific and technical capacity in the field of nuclear and radiation safety.
