Uzbekistan and Russia Launch Joint Project to Develop Nuclear Medicine

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 10 February, a working meeting was held at the Uzatom Agency to discuss the prospects for developing nuclear medicine in Uzbekistan. The meeting took place within the framework of active Uzbek-Russian cooperation in one of the country’s most strategically important healthcare sectors.

Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Project Office of the Health Projects Center, the Committee for Industrial, Radiation, and Nuclear Safety under the Cabinet of Ministers, the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences, the state enterprise Radiopreparat, leading medical centers across the country, and experts from the Rosatom Technologies Construction Division.

During the meeting, the Russian side shared its experience in creating modern nuclear medicine infrastructure, including cyclotron complexes, radiopharmaceutical production, PET/CT diagnostic centers, and the implementation of turnkey international projects.

Following the discussions, both sides agreed to jointly develop a roadmap and strategy for the advancement of nuclear medicine in Uzbekistan. These documents will form the foundation for technology transfer, training of highly qualified specialists, and improving the quality of medical care. The project aims to significantly enhance the effectiveness of early diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases using nuclear technologies.

Initiatives in nuclear medicine are being implemented with the active support of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. In particular, under his guidance, a Nuclear Medicine Center is being established in Tashkent. By 2026, it is planned to be equipped with PET/CT scanners, a cyclotron, a radiopharmaceutical laboratory, a Gamma Knife, and a CyberKnife.

At the same time, the oncology care system is being developed, early cancer diagnosis programs are being implemented, personnel are being trained to international standards, and cooperation with the Russian Federation and the state corporation Rosatom is being strengthened.

Uzatom Agency continues to support the development of nuclear medicine in Uzbekistan, facilitating the adoption of advanced technologies and expanding public access to modern diagnostics and high-tech treatment.
