Tokayev and Sharif Confirm Launch of Transport Corridor Through Uzbekistan and Afghanistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif have officially confirmed the implementation of a large-scale transport route passing through Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, which was accorded high political status during recent negotiations.
The multimodal corridor project, “Belarus — Russia — Kazakhstan — Uzbekistan — Afghanistan — Pakistan,” is designed to connect CIS countries with the deep-water ports of Gwadar and Karachi, providing the region with direct access to the Indian Ocean.
Uzbekistan will serve as a key transit hub within this route, ensuring logistic connectivity between Central Asia and South Asia. The southern city of Termez has been designated as the main hub, set to concentrate cargo flows and coordinate multimodal transport infrastructure.
The practical implementation of the project builds on a previously signed “roadmap” in Termez, which includes the introduction of digital transport documents, optimization and simplification of customs procedures, aiming to accelerate cargo movement and enhance the efficiency of the transit corridor.
The corridor’s development aligns with strategic initiatives to strengthen regional connectivity and advance transport infrastructure in Central Asia.
