Seminar on Feasibility Study of Central Asia – Azerbaijan Green Energy Corridor Held in Baku

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A kickoff seminar on the feasibility study of the “Central Asia – Azerbaijan Green Energy Corridor” project was held in Baku.

Participants included representatives from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, transmission system operators, regulatory authorities, as well as representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and other stakeholders.

The project envisions the creation of an energy corridor connecting the Caspian and Black Sea regions, enabling the transport of renewable energy from Central Asia to European markets.

Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov described the initiative as “highly promising,” noting strong interest from regional partners beyond the officially participating countries.

Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Energy Sanjar Zharkeshov highlighted the country’s substantial energy potential, stating that by 2030 Kazakhstan aims to reach a total installed capacity of 26 gigawatts, with 30–35% coming from renewable sources. He emphasized that the country already has surplus energy resources and is interested in exporting clean energy to European markets through such corridors.

Feruz Kurbonov, Deputy Chairman for Investments at the JSC “National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan,” expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting that Uzbekistan is actively investing in key energy infrastructure and expects to supply additional electricity to the regional grid by 2030 for subsequent export to Europe.

Sunniya Durani-Jamal, Head of the ADB Representation in Azerbaijan, noted that the project will strengthen regional connectivity. During the seminar, CESI presented a preliminary feasibility study, described as “very promising,” and proposed an analytical framework and plan for the next steps of Stage I.

Participants agreed on key technical assumptions, data requirements, and the timeline for completing the Stage I Feasibility Report, with Stage II preparation to follow.

The project is implemented in partnership with ADB and AIIB and supported by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2025.

The initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and promote the export of renewable energy from Central Asia to European markets.
