Richard Komenda: “We are always ready to support the government’s initiatives to further promote human rights for the sustainable development of Uzbekistan”

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 9 October 2019, the Senate hosted a meeting of the Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Svetlana Artikova with the head of the regional branch of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia, Richard Komenda.

During the meeting, issues of developing cooperation in the field of further strengthening and protecting human rights and freedoms were discussed.

It was noted that the issue of ensuring the observance of the rights and legitimate interests of citizens remains one of the most pressing issues on the current world agenda, and that is why it is necessary to strengthen the dialogue of international organizations and governments in further strengthening cooperation in this direction and mutual exchange of experience.

At the same time, the search for an effective solution to problems in the field of protecting human rights in the Central Asian region and the joint development of clear mechanisms for their elimination are gaining importance. In this regard, during the meeting, emphasis was placed on the further implementation of international standards and norms in the national legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The parties also dwelt in detail on the status of the work carried out in the country in the field of human rights, in particular the activities of the Ombudsman. In this regard, the emphasis is on access to justice, as well as on the promotion of youth rights and their full support. It was noted that the strengthening of cooperation in this and other areas will contribute to the further coordination of the actions of national human rights bodies, the development of effective solutions to human rights problems not only throughout the country, but also in the region.

The head of the regional branch of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia, Richard Komenda, expressed his willingness to support the initiatives of the parliament and government to further promote human rights for the sustainable development of Uzbekistan.

During the meeting, an exchange of views also took place on other pressing issues of the regional and international agenda.
