New opportunities for export of Uzbek fruits and vegetables to Russia

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - In recent years, the competent authorities of Uzbekistan and Russia have been carrying out fruitful work to organize the activities of checkpoints where the Green Corridor regime operates. The goal is to establish an effective system for supplying the highest quality Uzbek fruit and vegetable products to the Russian market and to eliminate the barriers that exist in this direction, Dunyo reported.

The agreement on establishment of checkpoints with the operation of the Green Corridor regime for the import of Uzbek fruits and vegetables is enshrined in the Protocol on the observance of phytosanitary requirements when importing fruits and vegetables of high phytosanitary risk from the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Russian Federation. The document was signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation in Moscow on 2 February 2017.

The specified procedure envisages accelerated customs and phytosanitary procedures at certain checkpoints. In 2018, the Russian side identified 7 temporary storage warehouses (TSWs) in Russia, which were included in the list of Green Corridor checkpoints. As a result of the negotiations with the active participation and assistance of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Moscow in 2019, an agreement was reached to increase the number of temporary storage facilities to 19. The final stage included negotiations to include 3 more checkpoints in the Green Corridor list.

At the same time, it should be noted that, according to the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor), there are no restrictions on the supply of fruits and vegetables from Uzbekistan to any customs warehouses convenient to them that are not part of the Green Corridor regime.

Thus, the active measures taken together with the Russian side allow creating favorable and mutually beneficial conditions for the export of “Made in Uzbekistan” fruit and vegetable products to the Russian market. All this, coupled with the ongoing work on the opening of wholesale distribution centers in the regions of Uzbekistan and Russia, will contribute to a further increase in bilateral trade to the US$10 billion mark indicated by the heads of state.
