Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 8 February 2021, a delegation consisting of First Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Achilbay Ramatov, Minister of Energy Alisher Sultanov and other responsible persons visited the construction site of the future thermal power plant in Syrdarya region.

The project is being implemented by the Saudi company ACWA Power. The start of the construction of the new TPP was given on 24 January 2021.

The implementation of a project to attract foreign direct investment in the construction of the Syrdarya thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,500 MW was the result of the introduction of a new format in the energy sector of Uzbekistan - public-private partnership (PPP).

At the same time, ACWA Power plans to use the most modern design solutions and energy-efficient technologies, which will make it possible to bring the efficiency of this project to 60%. This will allow the new TPP to save nearly twice as much natural gas as the current thermal power plants that use natural gas to generate electricity.

The construction of the TPP with a total estimated cost of US$1.2 billion was initiated thanks to cooperation between the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan and the Saudi company ACWA Power, which signed an agreement in March 2020.
