Youth environmental campaign “Train to the Aral Sea”: A contribution to the region’s sustainable future
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — From 28 to 31 May 2025, Uzbekistan is hosting a large-scale youth environmental campaign titled “Train to the Aral Sea.”
The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, the Committee for Tourism Development, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan Railways (Uzbekistan Temir Yullari), and other relevant agencies.
The primary goal of the campaign is to raise environmental awareness—especially among young people—about the ecological disaster in the Aral Sea region, foster a responsible attitude toward nature, and engage the younger generation in efforts to restore and ensure the sustainable development of the region.
As part of the campaign, more than 600 young activists selected from across the country will travel to Nukus and Muynak to see firsthand the environmental challenges facing the region and the measures being taken to address them.
The campaign program includes the following key activities:
Familiarization visits to the I.V. Savitsky State Museum of Art in Nukus and an educational and cultural trip to Muynak under the slogan “The Aral is Ours!”
In Muynak, participants will visit the Aral Sea History Museum, the iconic “cemetery of ships,” memorial complexes, and other sites symbolizing the region’s environmental tragedy.
In partnership with AralForest and GreenAralSea, and under the national “Yashil Makon” (“Green Space”) program, participants will take part in greening activities on saline and sandy lands.
The agenda also includes presentations, educational seminars, and training sessions on environmental protection, climate change, and the development of eco-tourism.
A cultural program featuring concerts, roundtable discussions, public meetings, and awareness-raising events with the involvement of experts and civil society representatives.
Additionally, the participants will create media content in the form of video blogs and stories under the hashtags #TrainToTheAral, #TheAralIsOurs, and #YouthForTheAral, through thematic rubrics like “EcoVlog” and “AralDiary.” The event will be widely promoted across social media platforms.
The “Train to the Aral Sea” campaign is not only designed to draw national attention to the Aral Sea crisis, but also to help nurture a new environmental consciousness among Uzbekistan’s youth—laying the foundation for a greener and more sustainable future.
