Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 21-22 May 2021, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) in cooperation with the Regional Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Central Asia (UNODC) and the Youth Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan held Tashkent International UN Model (TIMUN), which is one of the most global youth projects in Central Asia.
The opening ceremony of the Tashkent International Model UN was held at WIUT with the participation of the UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia Ms. Ashita Mittal and the UNODC International Coordinator Mr. Kuhn Markwering, Director of the Agency for Youth Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Mr. Alisher Sadullayev, His Excellency Ambassador India in Uzbekistan Manish Prabhata, His Excellency the Ambassador of Great Britain to Uzbekistan Timothy Torlot and the Rector of WIUT Bakhrom Mirkasimov.
The initiators of this conference were active students from the Community of the International Model UN at WIUT and the Student Union of the academic year 2020-2021.
This conference is a unique opportunity and platform for empowering youth in the fields of international diplomacy, global politics, public speaking, leadership and effective negotiation. TIMUN provides a bridge between the United Nations and students, enabling young people to engage in open dialogue on a range of complex issues and propose solutions to global problems. This year’s TIMUN 2021 conference was held to promote the Doha Declaration and the United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which took place in Kyoto in 2021.
During the conference, seven major UN bodies were modeled, such as the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the General Assembly, UNESCO, the Security Council, the Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs (third committee), the Crisis Committee and the Commission on the Advancement of Science and technologies.
Over the course of two days, within each simulated UN body, the following topics were raised and discussed: "Economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic, aimed at solving modern problems related to hunger, health and food insecurity", "Impact of COVID-19 on life of refugees ”,“ Schooling Children in Conflict Zones ”,“ Expanding Sustainable Energy Sources in Developing Countries ”,“ Promoting Crime Prevention, Criminal Justice and the Rule of Law to Achieve 17 Sustainable Development Goals ”,“ Impact of COVID-19 on Peace and Security "And" COVID-19 and vaccine distribution. "
The conference of the Tashkent International Model UN attracted over 200 gifted and interested in solving global problems of students from Uzbekistan, and also facilitated the participation of international students in holding meetings within each simulated UN body.
The implementation of this project contributed to the strengthening of close and fruitful relations between Westminster International University in Tashkent, UNODC and the Agency for Youth Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan to further promote and support youth in the field of legal culture, global politics and the rule of law.
