Uzbekistan’s Road Safety Service denies eeports of introducing driver points system on 1 February

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Road Safety Service (SBDD) of Uzbekistan has denied the rumors circulating on social media about the introduction of a points-based penalty system for drivers starting on 1 February.

The service clarified that while this mechanism is indeed outlined in a new law previously approved by the Senate, it has not yet come into effect. The document must first be signed by the president and specify exact implementation timelines.

It is expected that law enforcement agencies will be given several months to test and adapt the points system before its official launch.

On 24 January, the Senate approved the introduction of the points-based penalty system, which was supported by lawmakers in November 2023. Under this system, drivers who accumulate 12 penalty points will have their driving rights revoked for at least six months.

The law also introduces criminal liability for repeat offenders driving under the influence, tightens driver training requirements, and regulates the use of vehicles powered by alternative fuels, such as liquefied gas.
