Uzbekistan’s Population Exceeds 38.2 Million as of 1 January 2026
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — As of 1 January 2026, the permanent population of the Republic of Uzbekistan reached 38.23 million people, representing an increase of 1.8%, or 693,500 people, compared to 1 January 2025, according to the National Statistics Committee.
The population is distributed almost equally between urban and rural areas: 19.47 million people (50.9%) live in cities, while 18.76 million (49.1%) reside in rural areas. Women account for 18.98 million (49.6%), and men 19.26 million (50.4%). Population density reached 85.2 people per square kilometer, up by 1.6 from the previous year.
In 2025, 879,600 live births were registered, corresponding to a birth rate of 23.2 per thousand, with the number of newborns decreasing by 46,800 compared to 2024. Among the newborns, 454,700 were boys (51.7%) and 424,900 were girls (48.3%). Of the total births, 419,500 occurred in urban areas (47.7%) and 460,100 in rural areas (52.3%).
The number of deaths in 2025 amounted to 177,100, with a mortality rate of 4.7 per thousand, representing an increase of 2.7 thousand compared to 2024. Among the deceased, 97,500 were men (55.1%) and 79,600 were women (44.9%); 95,700 deaths occurred in urban areas (54.1%) and 81,400 in rural areas (45.9%).
The natural population increase totaled 702,500 people.
Regarding marriages, 267,100 were registered in 2025, with a marriage rate of 7.1 per thousand, 4.7 thousand fewer than in 2024. Of these, 132,600 marriages were registered in urban areas (49.7%) and 134,500 in rural areas (50.3%).
Divorces numbered 46,900 cases (divorce rate 1.2 per thousand), increasing by 1,800 compared to 2024. Urban residents accounted for 28,200 divorces (60.1%), and rural residents 18,700 (39.9%).
Migration flows in 2025 included 252,792 arrivals into the country, including 1,159 from abroad, and 261,750 departures, including 10,117 abroad. The majority of migration occurred within the country, involving 251,633 people.
