Uzbekistan’s Legislative Chamber Reviews Draft Law on Ratification of Agreement with Jordan on Transfer of Detainees
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis examined a draft law on the ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on the transfer of detained persons, signed in Samarkand on 26 August 2025.
In recent years, Uzbek-Jordanian relations have developed on the principles of mutual respect and constructive dialogue, fostering close cooperation on international and regional issues.
At the same time, the growing threats posed by terrorism, extremism, economic crimes, and various forms of organized crime require strengthened intergovernmental cooperation and the improvement of the legal framework in this area.
Establishing an effective mechanism for interstate legal assistance in combating crime and ensuring its systematic application remain pressing priorities. Until now, there was no legal framework between Uzbekistan and Jordan regarding the transfer of detainees, which limited the scope of bilateral cooperation.
The Agreement, consisting of a preamble and 23 articles, sets out the procedures, grounds, and conditions for transferring individuals either for criminal prosecution or for serving a sentence imposed against them.
Dilbar Mamadzhonova, member of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense, and Security, emphasized that the entry into force of the Agreement will enhance the efficiency of law enforcement agencies in both countries in investigating criminal cases and their adjudication in courts. It will also prevent offenders from evading justice, reinforcing the principle of accountability.
Following discussions, deputies approved the draft law and forwarded it to the Senate for further consideration.
