Uzbekistan’s Legislative Chamber ratifies treaty on allied relations with Tajikistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  On 26 November, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis passed a law ratifying the Treaty on Allied Relations between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in three readings.

The treaty, signed by Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon on 18 April 2024, in Dushanbe, aims to reinforce the legal foundation for ensuring independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and sustainable economic development of both nations.

Comprising a preamble and 26 articles, the treaty underscores key principles such as resolving regional conflicts exclusively through peaceful means aligned with international law, upholding sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders. It also calls for continued efforts in demarcating the state border, advancing parliamentary diplomacy, and strengthening interparliamentary relations.

The document emphasizes deepening economic, investment, and scientific cooperation, fostering scientific and industrial collaboration, and promoting fair use of water resources. It outlines joint water management and hydro-energy projects and prioritizes active collaboration within international organizations and multilateral frameworks.

Further provisions focus on expanding partnerships in science, education, healthcare, sports, culture, tourism, cultural heritage preservation, transport, logistics, energy, ecology, and information exchange. The treaty also addresses countering modern security threats, mitigating their impacts, and enhancing military-technical cooperation.

The law was unanimously supported by all 145 participating deputies and will now proceed to the Senate for review.
