Uzbekistan’s foreign trade turnover reaches US$21.56 billion

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In January-July 2021, Uzbekistan’s foreign trade turnover (FTT) reached US$21.56 billion, which, compared to the same period in 2020, increased by US$1.98 billion (an increase of 10.1%), the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan said.

Of the total volume of the FTT, exports amounted to US$8.11 billion (by January-July 2020, there was a decrease by 2.0%), and imports – US$13.44 billion US dollars (an increase of 19.0%). As a result, the foreign trade turnover amounted to a passive balance in the amount of US$5.33 billion.

Among the 20 large partner countries in foreign economic activity, there is also an active foreign trade balance with four countries, in particular with such countries as Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkey. The remaining 16 countries maintain a passive balance of foreign trade turnover

Today Uzbekistan carries out trade relations with 174 countries of the world. The largest volume of foreign trade turnover was recorded with the PRC (18.7%), the Russian Federation (17.3%), Kazakhstan (10.3%), Turkey (8.7%), the Republic of Korea (4.9%), Kyrgyzstan (2.4%) and Germany (1.9%).

In the structure of the republic’s foreign trade turnover, a significant share was noted in the city of Tashkent, which is 39.5%, or US$8.51 billion, and the smallest share was recorded at the level of 1.1%, or US$234.6 million, which is noted in Surkhandarya region.

The share of foreign trade turnover of the CIS countries, compared to the same period in 2020, increased by 4.6% and their share in foreign trade turnover, in January-July 2021, amounted to 37.4%.

The volume of foreign trade turnover of other states in January-July 2021, compared to the same period of 2019-2020, accordingly decreased and amounted to 62.6% of the total foreign trade turnover.

Foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the CIS countries reached 8 058.7 million US dollars. Of these, the volume of exports amounted to US$2.74 billion, and the volume of imports - US$5.32 billion.

The largest volume of foreign trade turnover with the CIS countries was recorded with the Russian Federation (46.3%), Kazakhstan (27.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (6.3%).

The foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the EAEU countries amounted to US$6.69 billion. Of these, the volume of exports amounted to US$2.12 billion, and the volume of imports – US$4.56  billion.

In January-July 2021, the total number of exporting entities amounted to 5 243 units, which ensured the increase in the volume of exports without gold to US$6.73 billion (an increase, compared to the same period in 2020, amounted to 35.0%).

In the structure of exports, 83.3% are goods, which mainly fall on industrial goods (29.5%), food products and live animals (8.7%), chemicals and similar products (7.1%).

Due to a decrease in exports to other foreign countries, the share of exports to the CIS countries increased and their share in its total volume amounted to 33.7%.

Compared to 2019-2020, our main partners in the export of goods and services in foreign trade in January-July 2021 were countries such as China, the Russian Federation, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Their share in the total export volume reached 61.9%.

In the structure of the republic’s exports, a significant share was noted in the city of Tashkent, which is 25.8%, or US$2.1 billion, and the smallest share was recorded at 1.4%, or US$111.8 million in Jizzakh region.

The volume of exports of fruits and vegetables amounted to 841.8 thousand tons and, in value terms, exceeded US$479.4 million (the rate of decline, compared to the same period in 2020, respectively, amounted to 3.8%). Based on this, 556.6 thousand tons of vegetables were exported in the amount of US$232.5 million, as well as 173.9 thousand tons of fruits and berries in the amount of US$175.3 million.

In January-July 2021, the share of fruits and vegetables in total exports amounted to 5.9%.

The main export markets for fruit and vegetable products are in the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan.

According to the results of January-July 2021, the largest volume in value terms of exports of fruit and vegetable products falls on Russia (30.5% of the total volume of fruit and vegetable products), which exceeds the volume of exports to China by 4.7 times.

According to the results of January-July 2021, the export of textile products was carried out in the amount of US$1.61 billion, which amounted to 19.8% of the total export volume and, compared to January-July 2020, it increased by 59.7 %.

Cotton yarn (56.1%), as well as finished knitwear and garments (23.1%), account for the main share in the structure of export of textile products. In January-July 2021, more than 442 types of textile products were exported to 58 countries of the world.

The largest share of textile exports falls on the Russian Federation (US$514.8 million - 32.0%) and China (US$402.3 million - 25.0%).

The volume of exports of services in January-July 2021 amounted to US$1.35 billion, or 16.7% of the total volume of trade exports and increased, compared to the same period in 2020, by 14.6%. Transport services (72.3%), travel (tourism) (13.0%), telecommunications, computer and information services (6.9%), and other business services (3.2%) account for the lion’s share of the export of services. At the same time, other services (4.6%), respectively, account for the largest share of financial services (1.1%), insurance and pension services (1.0%), construction services (1.0%), etc.

During the reporting period, imports amounted to US$13.44 billion (an increase in growth rates, compared to January-July 2020, amounted to 19.0%). The main share in its structure is occupied by machinery and transport equipment (33.3%), manufactured goods (18.6%), as well as chemicals and similar products (13.9%).

Analysis of the dynamics of imports of goods also showed that in January-July 2021, compared to the same period in 2020, the volume of imports of goods increased by US$2.02 billion and amounted to US$12.6 billion and imports of services reached US$843.4 million.

The share of imports from the CIS countries, compared to the same period in 2020, increased by 3.0% and their share in foreign trade turnover, in January-July 2021, amounted to 39.6%.

In general, in January-July 2021, goods and services from 151 countries were imported to the Republic of Uzbekistan. One third of imports are from such large partner countries as China, the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, Germany and India.

In the structure of imports of the republic, a significant share is noted in the city of Tashkent, which is 47.7%, or US$6.42 billion, and the smallest share is recorded in Surkhandarya - 0.9%, or US$121 million.

The volume of imports of services in January-July 2021 amounted to US$843.4 million, or 6.3% of its total volume, and increased by 18.1% compared to the same period in 2020. Travel (tourism - 45.7%), other business services (12.6%), transport services (10.8%), telecommunications, computer and information services (8.7%) account for the bulk of imports of services.

In addition, other services accounted for 22.2% of total imports of services, including a high share of construction services (8.4%), fees for the use of intellectual property (4.7%), maintenance and repair services (4.5%), etc.

At the end of January-July 2021, in the structure of imports, the volume of machinery and transport equipment reached US$4.48 billion and increased, compared to the same period in 2020, by 4.5%, in general, the share in the total volume of imports amounted to 33.3%

Imports of machinery and transport equipment increased by US$193.5 million. Most of the supply of these goods to the country falls on the PRC – US$1.53 billion (34.1%), the Republic of Korea - US$689.2 million (15.4%) and Turkey - US$452.1 million (10.1%).

At the end of January-July 2021, in the structure of imports, the volume of industrial goods reached US$2.49 billion and increased, compared to the same period in 2020, by 31.2%, in general, the share in the total volume of imports amounted to 18.6%.

The main imports of industrial goods are cast iron and steel (US$1.04 billion), metal products (US$312.1 million), products from nonmetallic minerals (US$218.7 million), textile yarn, fabrics, finished products (US$211.2 million), etc.
