Uzbekistan’s foreign trade turnover hits 24.5 billion in 1H

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- According to the results of January-June 2022, the foreign trade turnover (FTT) of Uzbekistan reached US$24.49 billion, which, compared to the same period in 2021, increased by US$5.99 billion (an increase of 32.4%), the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan.

Of the total volume of the FTT, exports amounted to US$9.92 billion (by January-June 2021, an increase of 40.5% was noted), and imports – US$14.56 billion (an increase of 27.4%).

As a result, the balance of foreign trade turnover amounted to a passive balance of -US$4.64 billion.

The largest volume of foreign trade turnover was recorded in February 2022 and was noted at the level of US$5.23 billion. Compared to the same month in 2020, its increase amounted to US$2.84 billion. In June 2022, the volume of foreign trade turnover amounted to US$3.96 billion and, compared to the same period in 2021, it increased by 11.5%.

The foreign trade turnover of Uzbekistan in the II quarter of 2021 amounted to US$11.33 billion, which is 13.8% less than the previous quarterly figure.

Among the 20 major partner countries in foreign economic activity, there is an active foreign trade balance with four countries, in particular with such countries as Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkey. There is a passive balance of foreign trade turnover with 16 countries.

To date, the Republic of Uzbekistan has trade relations with 183 countries of the world. The largest volume of foreign trade turnover was recorded with China (18.5%), the Russian Federation (16.6%), Kazakhstan (8.6%), Turkey (7.1%), the Republic of Korea (5.3%), Kyrgyzstan (2.4%) and Germany (2.3%).

In the structure of the foreign trade turnover of the republic, a significant share was noted in the city of Tashkent, which is 37.8%, or US$9.26 billion, and the smallest share is fixed at 0.9%, or US$216.9 million, which is noted in Surkhandarya region.

The share of foreign trade turnover of the CIS countries in the period under review, compared to the same period in 2021, decreased by 1.3% and their share in foreign trade turnover, in January-June 2022, amounted to 35.7%.

The volume of foreign trade turnover of other states in January-June 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, increased by 1.3%, respectively, and amounted to 64.3% of the total foreign trade turnover.

The foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the CIS countries reached US$8.74 billion. Of these, the volume of exports amounted to US$3.26 billion, and the volume of imports – US$5.48 billion.

The largest volume of foreign trade turnover with the CIS countries was recorded with the Russian Federation (46.5%), Kazakhstan (24.1%) and Kyrgyzstan (6.7%).

The foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the EAEU countries amounted to US$6.98 billion. Of these, the volume of exports amounted to US$2.38 billion, and the volume of imports – US$4.59 billion.

In January-June 2022, the total number of exporting entities amounted to 5 237 units, which ensured that the volume of exports without gold reached 6 953.7 million US dollars (an increase of 22.5% compared to the same period in 2021).

In the structure of exports, 83.7% is occupied by goods, which mainly fall on industrial goods (24.0%), food products and live animals (6.6%), chemicals and similar products (5.8%).

The largest volume of exports was recorded in February 2022 and was noted at the level of US$2.7 billion. Compared to the same month in 2020, its increase amounted to US$1.89 billion. In June 2022, the volume of exports amounted to US$1.56 billion and, compared to the same period in 2021, increased by 18.6%.

Export of Uzbekistan in the II quarter of 2022 amounted to US$4.15 billion, which is 28.1% less than the previous quarterly figure.

Due to the increase in exports to other foreign countries, the share of exports to the CIS countries decreased and their share in its total volume amounted to 32.9%.

Compared to 2020-2021, our main partners in the export of goods and services in foreign trade turnover in January-June 2022 were such countries as PRC, the Russian Federation, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Their share in the total export volume reached 51.0%.

In the structure of exports of the republic, a significant share was noted in the city of Tashkent, which is 21.3%, or US$2.12 billion, and the smallest share was recorded at 1.1%, or US$108.1 million in Jizzakh region.

The volume of exports of fruits and vegetables in the period under review amounted to 820.8 thousand tons and, in value terms, reached US$449.4 million (the growth rate, compared to the same period in 2021, amounted to 11.6%, respectively).

In January-June 2022, the share of fruits and vegetables in total exports amounted to 4.5%. The main export markets for fruits and vegetables are the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, China and Pakistan.

According to the results of January-June 2022, the largest volume in terms of value of exports of fruits and vegetables falls on the Russian Federation (36.3% of the total volume of fruits and vegetables), which exceeds the volume of exports to China by 3.7 times

According to the results of January-June 2022, the export of textile products was carried out in the amount of US$1.67 billion, which accounted for 16.9% of the total export volume and, compared to January-June 2021, it increased by 23.5%.

In the structure of exports of textile products, the main share is occupied by cotton yarn (52.6%), as well as finished knitwear and garments (24.9%). In January-June 2022, more than 481 types of textile products were exported to 66 countries of the world.

The largest share of textile exports goes to the Russian Federation (US$573.4 million - 34.3%) and Turkey (US$340.8 million - 20.4%).

The volume of exports of services in January-June 2022 amounted to US$1.62 billion, or 16.3% of the total volume of trade exports and increased by 41.9% compared to the same period in 2021. As part of the export of services, the lion’s share is occupied by transport services (50.3%), travel (tourism) (35.0%), telecommunications, computer and information services (5.7%), other business services (4.9%).

At the same time, other services (3.9%) account for the largest share, respectively, of insurance and pension services (1.5%), financial services (1.2%), maintenance and repair services (0.4%), etc.

During the reporting period, imports amounted to US$14.56 billion (an increase in growth rates, compared to January-June 2021, amounted to 27.4%). The main share in its structure is occupied by machinery and transport equipment (33.9%), industrial goods (18.9%), as well as chemicals and similar products (13.7%).

An analysis of the dynamics of imports of goods also showed that in January-June 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, the volume of imports of goods increased by US$2.7 billion and amounted to US$13.47 billion, and imports of services reached US$1.1 billion.

The smallest volume of imports was recorded in March 2022 and was noted at the level of US$2.75 billion. Compared to the same month in 2020, its increase amounted to US$862.8 million. In June 2021, the volume of imports amounted to US$2.4 billion and, compared to the same period in 2020, it increased by 7.3%.

Imports of Uzbekistan in the II quarter of 2022 amounted to US$7.18 billion, which is 2.7% less than the previous quarterly figure.

The share of imports from the CIS countries, compared to the same period in 2021, decreased by 2.0% and their share in foreign trade turnover, in January-June 2022, amounted to 37.6%.

In general, according to the results of January-June 2022, goods and services were imported to the Republic of Uzbekistan from 162 countries. One third of imports come from such large partner countries as the PRC, the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, Germany and Turkmenistan.

In the structure of imports of the republic, a significant share was noted in Tashkent city, which is 49.1% or US$7.14 billion, and the smallest share was recorded in Surkhandarya - 0.7%, or US$99.6 million.

The volume of imports of services in January-June 2022 amounted to US$1.1 billion, or 7.5% of its total volume, and increased by 65.9% compared to the same period in 2021. As part of the import of services, the main share is occupied by travel (tourism - 56.9%), transport services (14.9%), other business services (7.5%), telecommunications, computer and information services (6.8%).

In addition, other services accounted for 13.9% of total imports of services, including a high share of fees for the use of intellectual property (5.4%), construction services (3.3%), maintenance and repair services (2.1%), etc.

According to the results of January-June 2022, in the structure of imports, the volume of machinery and transport equipment reached US$4.94 billion and increased by 29.4% compared to the same period in 2021; in general, the share in the total volume of imports amounted to 33.9%.

Imports of machinery and transport equipment increased by US$1.12 billion. Most of the supplies of these goods to the country account for PRC — US$1.93 billion (39.1%), the Republic of Korea — US$870.0 million (17.6%) and Turkey — US$393.0 million (8.0%).

According to the results of January-June 2022, in the structure of imports, the volume of industrial goods reached US$2.75 billion and increased by 31.2% compared to the same period in 2021; in general, the share in total imports amounted to 18.9%.

Mainly imports of industrial goods account for cast iron and steel (US$1.22 billion), metal products (US$371.0 million), textile yarn, fabrics, finished products (US$252.9 million), paper or cardboard (US$198.8 million), etc.
