Uzbekistan’s Energy Minister files complaint against blogger

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, has filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) against blogger Otabek Bakirov, known by his online handle bakiroo.

The complaint concerns a post published by Bakirov about the Sagbon substation in Tashkent, where he discussed the issue of frequent repairs at the facility.

"The Minister claims that the post contains offensive and derogatory statements that should be considered according to the established procedure," Bakirov wrote in his post.

Interestingly, the post about the ongoing issues with the Sagbon substation was published over a year ago, on 5 June 2023. However, Mirzamakhmudov filed his complaint only on 10 October 2024, a full year and four months later, noted Bakirov.

Bakirov also pointed out an intriguing detail: the complaint was lodged just six days after Mirzamakhmudov’s appearance on the Lolazor podcast. Bakirov is a regular participant on the Lolazor podcast.

"After the first episode of the Lolazor podcast, we, along with the energy specialists, visited the Sagbon substation, which is constantly undergoing repairs, and even produced a small report," emphasized Bakirov.

However, soon after this, Tashkent’s district was disconnected from the Sagbon substation, and consumers in the area began receiving electricity from other substations.

Bakirov also highlighted that the complaint was filed not by citizen Mirzamakhmudov, but by him in his official role as the Minister.

The complaint is currently under review by the Cybersecurity Department of the Tashkent City Police Department.
