Uzbekistan wins gold award at German Design Award for Pavilion at Expo 2025

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  The Uzbekistan Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER, has been awarded the prestigious Gold German Design Award in the category of "Excellent Architecture — Trade Fairs and Exhibitions."

The pavilion, named "Garden of Knowledge," reflects the future and development of Uzbekistan, drawing on the principles of sustainable development and the use of natural materials.

Spanning approximately 750 square meters, the design of the pavilion combines traditional Uzbek craftsmanship with modern architecture. It is characterized by openness and accessibility, creating a space for ideas and innovations. Visitors will have the opportunity to be part of shaping Uzbekistan’s future.

The construction uses eco-friendly and recyclable materials: wood, clay, and brick, which are part of Uzbek traditions and have been repurposed in line with circular economy principles. After the exhibition, these materials will be reused in biological or technical cycles. The wooden structure is easily dismantled into modules for reuse. Each beam, made from Japanese cypress (sugi) grown near Osaka, can be tracked via a smartphone using special tags on the columns.

The project, commissioned by the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan and the Art and Culture Development Foundation, was highly praised by the German Design Award experts. Shirin Frangoüle-Brückner, Managing Director of ATELIER BRÜCKNER, emphasized the importance of sustainable architecture and the harmonious integration of traditions with modern approaches. Gayane Umrova, Chairperson of the Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF), highlighted the significance of the project for preserving and promoting Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage on the global stage.
