Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 26 August 2020, an online meeting was held between the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Great Britain Timothy Torlot.
During the conversation, an exchange of views took place on the state and prospects of Uzbek-British relations. Issues of inter-parliamentary cooperation, combating human trafficking and forced labor, as well as ensuring gender equality were discussed.
It was noted that thanks to the efforts of the leaderships of the two countries, an unprecedented intensification of political dialogue and all-round cooperation between Uzbekistan and Great Britain was ensured.
The British side highly appreciated the timely and effective measures taken by the government of Uzbekistan to counter the pandemic and its impact on the economy, as well as provide social support to the population. The ambassador noted that it is Uzbekistan that demonstrates tangible positive results in this direction.
During the meeting, it was noted that parliamentary ties are a strong side of the Uzbek-British relations. The British side stressed the need to deepen the dialogue in this direction, including the intensification of the activities of inter-parliamentary friendship groups. The ambassador praised the country’s efforts in implementing the state youth policy and expressed readiness to cooperate in projects within the framework of the Youth Parliament.
Timothy Torlot noted that in recent years, there have been significant positive changes in the field of human rights, in particular, gender equality, the elimination of forced labor, social protection of vulnerable segments of the population, rehabilitation of victims of trafficking and violence. He welcomed the efforts of the country’s leadership aimed at solving these problems.
As part of the dialogue, the parties considered environmental protection issues ahead of the UN conference on climate change. Plans were also voiced, as well as proposals for cooperation in the field of combating human trafficking and forced labor.
