Uzbekistan to strengthen protection of victims of domestic violence

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis have adopted in the first reading a bill aimed at supporting families and women, and enhancing the legal protection of victims of domestic violence.

The bill proposes an amendment to Article 41 of the Family Code, further strengthening the protection of victims from harassment and violence. It includes a provision that allows the court to make a decision without setting a reconciliation period upon the request of a husband or wife who has become a victim of domestic violence.

Additionally, an amendment to the Housing Code is proposed, which would allow the court, when considering cases related to forced entry into a residence, to, upon the initiative of the property owner (husband or wife who owns the property), force the party being evicted to move into another residence with equivalent conditions or require the property owner to pay rent for an alternative accommodation based on an agreement between the parties.

The adoption of this bill will further enhance the protection of victims of domestic violence, guarantee the rights of individuals in family relationships, take into account the interests of property owners in housing disputes, and improve management in the field of family and women’s issues.

The bill was supported by deputies and passed in the first reading.
