Uzbekistan tightens traffic regulations
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — During the latest plenary session of the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan, senators reviewed and approved the Law "On Amendments and Additions to the Code of Administrative Responsibility." The new measures aim to enhance road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and encourage the use of public transportation.
In recent years, traffic congestion in Uzbekistan, particularly in Tashkent, has reached critical levels. According to experts, daily traffic jams in the capital range from 7 to 9 points, with peak hours reaching the maximum level of 10 points. This not only causes stress for drivers and passengers but also leads to an increase in road conflicts and significant time losses.
To address this issue, authorities have been actively developing public transportation. Over the past two years, the number of buses in Tashkent has doubled, and the introduction of dedicated bus lanes has reduced travel intervals by half. As a result, bus ridership has increased, with approximately 1 million passengers using public transport daily.
However, senators noted that gaps in legislation reduce the effectiveness of these measures. Despite existing bans, many drivers continue to use dedicated bus lanes, drive on sidewalks, bike lanes, and green areas. Additionally, illegal barriers have become more common, obstructing not only regular traffic but also emergency and rescue services.
To eliminate these issues, the Law introduces a new Article 1287 in the Code of Administrative Responsibility. Under the new regulations, driving in bus-only lanes will result in a fine equal to one basic calculation unit. Repeat offenses within a year will lead to a tripled fine.
Penalties for driving on sidewalks, pedestrian and bicycle paths, and violating traffic signs will also be increased. Additional measures are introduced to combat illegal road barriers.
Senators emphasized that the adoption of this law aims to improve road safety, reduce accidents, and create more comfortable conditions for public transport passengers. The new measures are also expected to help ease congestion and improve the environmental situation in urban areas.
After discussions, the law was unanimously approved by the Senate and will come into effect in the near future.
