Uzbekistan Shares Experience in Parliamentary Engagement with UN Human Rights Mechanisms
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A national seminar titled “Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation with UN Human Rights Mechanisms: Focus on the Universal Periodic Review and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women” was held at the State Palace in Ulaanbaatar.
The event was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in collaboration with the State Great Khural of Mongolia.
Among the participants was Akmal Saidov, Member of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and academician. Due to the concurrent participation of Uzbekistan’s delegation in the 144th session of the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva, his address to the seminar was delivered via video message.
In his speech, Akmal Saidov presented in detail Uzbekistan’s practical experience in engaging its parliament with UN human rights mechanisms — from preparing national reports under the Universal Periodic Review and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to ensuring parliamentary oversight in implementing related recommendations.
He emphasized the central role of the parliament in the reporting process, which involves ministries, civil society institutions, and human rights organizations. This includes holding parliamentary hearings and developing a National Action Plan to implement recommendations from international bodies.
Special emphasis was placed on the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and experiences among countries to effectively integrate international standards into national legal systems.
The seminar was also attended by members of the Mongolian Parliament, representatives of government agencies, civil society, international organizations, and independent experts.
Uzbekistan’s active participation in the seminar held in Ulaanbaatar reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the principles of openness, dialogue, and practical engagement in the field of human rights on the international stage.
