Uzbekistan, Rupa Discuss Joint Garment Production

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan’s Ambassador Sardor Rustambaev held working talks with the leadership of India’s Rupa, one of the country’s largest manufacturers of knitwear and underwear.

The meeting with company director Ramesh Agarwal took place in West Bengal and focused on prospects for launching joint textile production in Uzbekistan.

Rupa is a major player in the Indian market, producing more than 8,000 types of clothing for men, women, and children, with an annual turnover of about US$150 million. Its products are exported to markets across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe and are recognized internationally.

Ramesh Agarwal highlighted the company’s strategic plans to expand into the Central Asian and CIS markets and expressed readiness to implement projects in Uzbekistan, citing the country’s favorable investment climate and opportunities for foreign investors.

The discussions included plans to establish a joint venture with one of Uzbekistan’s textile factories to expand into new export markets.

The negotiations mark a new stage in Uzbek-Indian trade and economic cooperation. Partnership with Rupa could allow local manufacturers to adopt advanced Indian technologies and quality standards, boosting the competitiveness of Uzbek textile products.

The project is also expected to create new jobs and expand export geography through the Indian partner’s global distribution networks.

Rupa’s interest underscores the effectiveness of reforms in Uzbekistan’s textile sector and could attract additional investors from South Asia.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to conduct a detailed review of production sites in Uzbekistan as the next step toward implementing the joint project and advancing bilateral cooperation.
