Uzbekistan Railways receives new electric locomotives

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- State joint stock railway company Uzbekiston Temir Yollari received three cargo electric locomotives of O’ZEL series, which were produced in China.

The locomotives were purchased within the project “Updating locomotive fleet. Purchase of 11 electric cargo locomotives” with attraction of long-term loan of the Government of China.

Chairperson of the Board of Uzbekistan Temir Yollari Achilbay Ramatov said that purchase of 11 electric locomotives was logic continuation of development of railway industry of Uzbekistan.

He said that new locomotives were purchased within the economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and China.

Ramatov underlined that the locomotives were adapted to use in mountainous areas, including electrified railroad Maroqand-Qarshi-Termez.

The project cost is US$47.3 million. Eximbank allocated a loan for US$42 million and own resources of Uzbekiston Temir Yollari.

The loan issued for 20 years, with five year grace period. Interest rate is 2.25% APR plus margin of refinancing bat at 0.25%.

Consortium of the Chinese companies CNTIC and CNR DLRC are suppliers of electric cargo locomotives.

The Chinese consortium delivered three electric locomotives in Tashkent. Uzbekistan Temir Yollari will deliver other eight locomotives by the end of 2013.

Within the joint work, the sides improved technical characteristics of locomotives. The power of the locomotive was increased from 6,000 to 7,200 kilowatt and tractive effort – from 450 to 490 kN.
