Uzbekistan launches training program for cervical cancer screening

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — With the participation of the Agency for Strategic Reforms, a collaborative program has been launched with leading specialists from the University of Utah (USA) to train doctors in colposcopy.

The program is organized in accordance with Presidential Decree No. PP-402 of 25 November 2024, titled "On Measures to Improve the System for Controlling Oncological Diseases Among Women."

Initiated in November 2024, the educational project targets specialists working in branches of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health.

As mandated by the decree, the Agency for Strategic Reforms oversees the monitoring and evaluation of the program, which aims to enhance the quality of cancer diagnosis and control among women. Colposcopy is a crucial method for detecting precancerous conditions and cervical cancer. However, in Uzbekistan—where the population exceeds 37 million—only a limited number of specialists hold international certification in this field, making physician training a significant step forward in oncological diagnostics.

The program consists of several stages of practical training, equipping doctors with essential knowledge and skills. Advanced simulation models and tools are used to maximize the effectiveness of the learning process. Upon completion of the course and successful certification, medical professionals will receive certificates from the International Association of Gynecologic Oncologists. A key aspect of the program is the development of national trainers who will subsequently train their colleagues, ensuring the widespread adoption of colposcopy techniques across the country.

It is expected that up to 20 master trainers will be prepared under this initiative to train physicians in specialized "onco-monitoring" units.

The training program has been made possible through cooperation between the Agency for Strategic Reforms, the University of Utah (USA), the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, and the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Maternal and Child Health. The Sterling Fund provided financial support for the visit of international experts.

Presidential Decree No. PP-402 is designed to comprehensively improve the national oncology control system. Its key objectives include developing early cancer detection programs, integrating modern diagnostic and treatment methods, enhancing medical professionals’ qualifications, and strengthening international partnerships. Special attention is given to upgrading healthcare facilities’ infrastructure and equipping them with advanced technology for effective screening and diagnosis.

These measures will help establish a sustainable system for cancer prevention and early detection, increasing the chances of successful treatment and improving women’s health across Uzbekistan.
