Uzbekistan-Latvia: inter-parliamentary cooperation is expanding

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - Today, parliamentary diplomacy also plays an important role in strengthening international relations and pursuing a constructive foreign policy. At the same time, attention is paid to the wide use of the possibilities of friendship groups with the parliaments of foreign countries.

On 3 February 2021, the first online meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis with the Seimas of Latvia took place.

The event was attended by members of the group, deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, members of the Senate and Parliament of Latvia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Latvia Kadamboy Sultanov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Latvia to Uzbekistan Mikhail Popokovs.

The parliamentarians focused on the results achieved in bilateral cooperation, the provision of mutual support within the framework of authoritative international organizations, the establishment and strengthening of mutually beneficial trade, economic, political, legal, cultural and humanitarian ties.

During the talks, the parties stressed the importance of further deepening inter-parliamentary ties in expanding bilateral cooperation, since it is parliamentarians who play an important role in the ratification of international agreements that will bring relations to a new level in all areas.

The keynote of the meeting was the issues of further countering the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The parties informed each other about the measures being taken in Uzbekistan and Latvia to combat the global threat.

At the talks, the parties noted the role of further building up and deepening inter-parliamentary ties in increasing bilateral interaction on a wide range of issues of mutual interest.

Following the meeting, the participants reaffirmed the parliaments' mutual commitment to the utmost strengthening of relations and practical cooperation between Uzbekistan and Latvia.
