Uzbekistan Joins International Nuclear Energy Summit 2026

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 10 March 2026, the Second International Nuclear Energy Summit (Nuclear Energy Summit 2026), organized under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hosted by the Government of France, took place in Paris. The delegation from Uzbekistan was led by Director of Uzatom, Azim Akhmedkhadjaev.

The summit brought together heads of state and government, leaders of international organizations and financial institutions, representatives of the nuclear industry, and leading experts. Participants discussed the pivotal role of nuclear energy in achieving decarbonization goals, ensuring energy security, and addressing global energy challenges.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi actively participated in the forum, providing technical expertise and facilitating panel discussions and roundtables. Key topics included innovative technologies, nuclear and radiation safety, financing mechanisms, and international collaboration in the sector.

French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted progress in ensuring nuclear power plant safety and emphasized small modular reactors (SMRs) as a promising development area. He underlined the importance of strengthening international partnerships with uranium producers, including Uzbekistan, to develop supply chains and fuel enrichment capabilities.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also emphasized SMRs, presenting Europe’s strategy to accelerate their deployment by the early 2030s and stressing the role of civilian nuclear energy in achieving climate goals.

Uzbekistan’s participation reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strict international standards of nuclear and radiation safety, responsible development of peaceful nuclear energy, and active engagement in the global dialogue on energy transition and decarbonization.

Ahkmedkhadjaev noted that the summit provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experience and showcase Uzbekistan’s achievements in nuclear energy. The delegation participated in a roundtable on global nuclear fuel supply security, discussing the reliability and resilience of fuel infrastructure.

Uzatom confirmed its ongoing commitment to the development of national nuclear energy in compliance with international safety standards, contributing to a sustainable future for Uzbekistan and the region.
