Uzbekistan Introduces AI-Based Mid- and Long-Term Earthquake Forecasting Practices

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree titled “On Additional Measures to Ensure Seismic Safety and Improve the Efficiency of Seismology Activities.”

The document outlines a set of priority areas, including the creation of a monitoring system for seismic stability of cultural heritage sites and transport infrastructure, digitalization of seismic safety processes, the implementation of artificial intelligence technologies, and comprehensive studies of construction site soils followed by measures to strengthen their resilience.

According to the decree, starting 1 January 2026, permanent radar and satellite monitoring will be introduced along highways A-373 and M-39, as well as adjacent mountainous railway sections in high landslide risk zones. In these same regions, AI-based mid- and long-term earthquake forecasting technologies will begin to be implemented.

At the initial stage, these technologies will be introduced in Tashkent, which will serve as a pilot site for the practical application of earthquake forecasting systems.

From 1 March 2026, the assessment of buildings and structures for seismic resistance will also incorporate artificial intelligence, allowing for more accurate risk evaluations and timely measures to strengthen construction safety.
