Uzbekistan intends to reset presidential terms to zero

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Presidential terms may be reset in Uzbekistan. This was stated by the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Sadyk Safayev in an interview with Kun.uz.

Answering a question about the possible zeroing of presidential terms, Sadyk Safayev noted that if a new Constitution is adopted, it will certainly enable all citizens, including the current president of Uzbekistan, to take part in elections under the new Constitution.

“Whether our president uses this opportunity and right or not, it primarily depends on the personality of the person,” Safayev added.

He noted that such amendments are present in the international community. The constitution, in turn, will be updated. Sadyk Safaev believes that Uzbekistan should continue to move towards reforms.

“I am sure that the person who started these reforms should have the opportunity to see them through,” Safayev said.

At the same time, Sadyk Safayev added that the incumbent President is not the kind of person who will "grab his teeth for power."
